August Fresh from the Farm - How We Grow Microgreens Sustainably

When you sprinkle sunflower microgreens on your avocado toast or toss some fresh pea shoots into a stir-fry, you’re not just adding flavour, you’re supporting a better way of growing food.

At Tiny Harvest, sustainability isn’t a buzzword. It’s the heartbeat of our farm and something we think about at every step, from seed to delivery. We believe it’s possible to grow nutritious food that’s good for people and gentle on the planet. Here’s how we do it.

    Grown Indoors, All Year Round

We grow all our microgreens indoors in a carefully controlled environment. That means we can grow year-round, rain or shine, without relying on pesticides or harsh chemicals.

Indoor farming allows us to use water much more efficiently than traditional methods. We’re proud of the systems we’ve put in place to recycle and reuse water, and we’re constantly experimenting with ways to do even better, like converting water collected from our dehumidifier for use in the growing process.

Because our setup protects against outdoor pests, we don’t need to use chemical pesticides. Our greens grow strong and clean, just the way nature intended. This is one of the reasons microgreens are considered a true superfood[OC1] , packed with nutrition and free from toxins.

    Minimal Waste, Clean Practices

We grow our greens in coco peat, a sustainable and natural growing medium made from coconut husks. It’s clean, effective, and easy to work with, plus, it’s kind to the environment.

Waste on the farm is kept to a minimum. Nothing goes to landfill if we can help it. Offcuts from our microgreens go to local chickens (who are very happy about it), and we share leftover growing materials with neighbouring farms and gardeners who use it as compost for their crops.

For our business customers, like restaurants and stores, we’ve designed a packaging system that’s both practical and more planet-friendly. Your first order arrives in a reusable branded container. After that, we deliver refills in bags that can be transferred into the same container, helping reduce single-use packaging. We don’t believe in handing over layers of unnecessary plastic, and we’re always looking for ways to keep things clean, simple, and sustainable.

    Locally Grown, Locally Loved

One of the best things about being a small farm is that we get to keep things close to home. We grow right here in Johannesburg and deliver our microgreens to homes, restaurants, and stores nearby. This keeps our supply chain short and sweet, and cuts down on unnecessary carbon emissions from transport and storage.

Because we’re so close to our customers, we can harvest and deliver within 24–48 hours. That means your microgreens arrive ultra-fresh, full of flavour, and bursting with nutrients. No warehouses, no long-distance trucking – just good food from our farm to your plate.

Local food systems like ours aren’t just better for the environment. They’re more resilient, more personal, and more supportive of the community. That’s the kind of future we want to grow.

    We’re Growing More Than Greens

At Tiny Harvest, we believe farming can be a force for good. We want to grow food that supports your health, respects the planet, and inspires the next generation to think differently about where their meals come from.

Whether it’s reusing water, delivering in reusable packaging, or finding new ways to reduce waste, we’re committed to doing things differently. Every tray of greens we send out is part of a bigger story, one that’s rooted in care, community, and conscious choices.

So thank you for supporting what we do. By choosing Tiny Harvest, you’re not just buying greens. You’re joining us in growing something better.

At Tiny Harvest, we grow our greens locally and sustainably in Johannesburg using solar power, recycled water, and zero-waste principles. We believe food should be good for your body, your taste buds, and the planet.

Each punnet is harvested to order so you get the freshest greens possible, delivered with care. Whether you’re trying them for the first time or adding them to your weekly grocery list, we’re here to help you eat better – one handful at a time.
